About the Book

The words of Lok Geet unfold knowledge across multidisciplinary subjects that are often studied in isolation. This study explores the folk music of Rajasthan in detail, emphasizing the innovative possibility of classifying it through a geographical perspective. It highlights the lyrical richness of folk compositions and their deep linkages with the geographical phenomena of the state. By weaving together physical and human geography, the work reveals how these two major branches of the discipline interact to explain the interdependency and inter-relationship between humans and their environment. The book begins by establishing the purpose and significance of the study, followed by a critical review of existing literature and the identification of knowledge gaps, which are addressed through a deductive approach. It then develops a contextual base by delving into the historical background of Rajasthani folk music, celebrating the communities and their distinctive singing techniques. The regional setting of Rajasthan is presented in relation to its diverse folk traditions, while the socio-economic profile of the state is examined alongside the impacts of globalization and the National Education Policy 2020. The narrative further unfolds the intimate bond between music and geography, offering fresh perspectives on how cultural expressions are embedded within landscapes. Primary data collected through field surveys, telephonic interviews, and online questionnaires are analyzed and evaluated to bring out authentic insights. The study culminates in a conclusion that situates Rajasthani folk music within a social and cultural geographical framework, calling on authorities and future generations to preserve the authenticity of this oral heritage. Forwarded through communities since the princely state era, these compositions encapsulate traditions, history, and identity. The use of digital tools such as QGIS and Google Earth Pro has further enriched the research by enabling the creation of maps that visualize the spatial dimensions of folk music traditions.
